Digital Radio

I enjoy interfacing my radio hobby with my computer hobby. I have found many was to do this. Either with a TNC or a sound card interface such as a rigblaster. This is a very exciding area of ham radio. It has the most promise of keeping ham radio hobby alive. I have found that the youth would rather type on the keyboard than to key up a microphone. That is fine because ham radio can do that too.

WinLink 2000

I also use Airmail for use with Winlink2000  Airmail is using an AEA PK900. I also use Airmail with the MARS BBS. I have been thinking about adding the DSP option for the PK900. I have the 9600 baud option, I just haven’t installed it yet. I really like this TNC. The firmware is a little out of date. If I upgrade to DSP I will also upgrade the firmware from 7.1 to 7.3. I like the LCD screen. Most TNC have a bunch of LEDs. This TNC is cool.

Pactor

For HF packet I use a old MFJ 1278. I replaced the 7812 regulator that keeps burning up with a switching regulator from Datel. This TNC has a puny heat sink. The Datel switching regulator is a drop in replacement for the old 7812. This replacement produces no heat.

ISS

For Satellite digital stuff I use AGWPE, UISS and a MFJ 1278 turbo TNC.

PSK-31

I use PSK31 Deluxe with a Pskmeter and a Rig Blaster Plus, I use the PRC132 radio mostly for digital modes. This radio’s output is 5 to 50 watts. The PSKMeter is a real time tool for PSK31 mode. This little kit will automatically adjust your audio output for a clean signal. Great IMD reports.

APRS

Find me on APRS

I use UIview 32, pmap 6.0 and a TNC-X

Roger Barker G4IDE SK

Roger Barker G4IDE became a silent key on September 9, 2004. The amateur radio community lost a great friend on that day. He will be remembered as a true ham. Roger was the author of WinPack, UI-View and UI-View32, as well as other programs. UI-View has had a huge and positive impact on the APRS community. Most of us only knew him through the UI-View support group, but some UI-View users were fortunate enough to have met him. He was ever-present on the list answering questions that had usually been asked before, but always courteous and always helpful. Even in the middle of the night, he often posted replies. He leaves behind a legacy that will be useful to thousands of hams world-wide for years to come, and his loving wife Dee, his son Steven and his daughter Kate.
