About me

Hello, my name is Ronn Folk my call is AD5JN, I am an amateur radio operator also known as a ham. I am also a Air Force MARS member my call is AFA4FR,( Military affiliate Radio Station ). I also received traffic handling procedures through the MARS training program. Ham radio is one of my many interests. I enjoy blending my hobbies together. I built my first crystal radio receiver when I was about 10 years old.  I used to listen to the BBC late at night with a water pipe as a ground and a wire antenna strung from a tree. Look ma no battery, How cool is this! I got my first ham license when I was in Jr. high school.  My first ham setup was a Harvey Wells transmitter and a Heath kit HR-10B receiver. I only had a few crystals that would work. I didn't have VFO for it. The HR-10B receiver was a pile of junk, I got it from a ham fest in Lawton OK. I removed all the wiring and components and rebuilt it, using the original manual as a guide.  My first new ham radio kit was a HW-8 QRP CW radio and matching power supply. I mowed lawns for a whole summer to get enough money to buy that radio. I built that little radio using the soldering skills my dad taught me. I had a lot of pride in the fact that I built it. I miss Heath Kit.  I used a dipole made from some twin TV lead that I found. The feed line was some throw away CB radio coax. I worked the world on that little radio.
